In support of employment and better quality of life of people with disabilities

Mária Nádaždyová, senior program manager EPPP, is the author of a report attempting to monitor the present situation in providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities living in social care institutions in Slovakia, prepared in the framework of a project entitled Examples of Good Practices – In Support of Deinstitutionalization of Social Care Services run by Supported Employment Agency in Bratislava. The report was initially presented at a nation-wide seminar on March 5, 2009 followed by a series of regional meetings and discussion workshops. The project, funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, aims to support initiatives pushing for a change of out dated institutional model of social care services as a precondition of achieving better quality of life and labour integration of people with disabilities. The report makes an effort to assess if the existing set of national policy tools is sufficient and adequate for reaching the proclaimed labour integration of people with disabilities and, at the same time, to explore if the prevailing obsolete forms and conditions of institutional care do not present serious, principal and insurmountable barrier for reaching this goal. This ambition is closely related to international commitments and obligations of Slovakia arising from the EU membership.
