JENEWEIN GALLERY: Entry of Slovakia into the EU I F. Schiller & Ľ. Feldek & F. Guldan I Ode to Joy

When Ľubomír Feldek translated the verses of Schiller's Ode to Joy into Slovak on the occasion of Slovakia's accession to the EU, we enthusiastically supported its book publication. The book, bound by hand and in leather, was published in a limited numbered edition of 100 copies, produced and designed by Viktor Vojtek. It was illustrated by Fero Guldan, and the foreword was written by the author of the translation, Ľubomír Feldek, who personally signed each copy. The book was printed by Tlačiarne BB Banská Bystrica and bound by Knihárska dielňa Lida Mlichová Žilina. The original version of the poem Ode to Joy became popular over time, but it achieved its greatest recognition when, together with the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, who used it in the finale of his Ninth Symphony, it informally became the anthem of the European Union. Informally because the Council of Europe in 1972 officially accepted only the melody of the Ode to Joy. In the universal language of music, it expresses the ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity common to all of Europe. The publication of the mentioned book with the 15th anniversary logo of our consulting group on Ex Libris brought us great joy. We consider the entry of the Slovak Republic into the EU to be one of the fundamental historical moments in the history of our country – 2024 is the year of its 20th anniversary. We experienced it very intensively as citizens and as entrepreneurs and consultants providing advice not only during our full membership in the EU, but also several years before during the preparations and accession process. Already in 1998, we founded the consulting and analytical institute EPPP – European Public Policy Partnership, and in 2004, when we became a full member of the community of European countries, we opened our EU office in Brussels.
